Thankful for Progress and Opportunities

I’m attempting to update our blog from the village.  I’ve tried several times and this is the first time I’ve been able to write anything.  I hope it actually posts when I’m done!

We just wanted to let you know that we’re doing fine despite the upheaval around us. For those of you who keep up with us on facebook, you know that there was a coup d’état last month.  It lasted only a week and seems to have been resolved.  It just so happened that we were in the capital that week (8 hours from our village) for our homeschooling co-op.  Unfortunately it was cut short and we ended up spending about 5 days inside while folks rioted in the streets, shooting in the air and burning tires 😦  It took awhile for us to get back to our village due to road blocks, riots, and gas station strikes.  But, we made it!

We started up the new homeschool year and it’s going great!  With Micah in 6th, Elijah in 2nd, and JJ in K5…it takes quite the effort to be done by lunch.  And in the afternoon we’ve picked up our Jula studies again and we’ve both seen some major progress just over the last 2 weeks.  We’re exhausted, but excited about our progress!

There has also been progress in our housebuilding project too! The village elders got together and decided to give us 5 ACRES of prime real estate!  Yes, 5 acres!  We were pleasantly shocked and surprised.  We’ve had the land “surveyed” by the Land and Forest warden and it has been “GPSed” (Is that a verb?).  Daniel is out, right now as I type, to track down some well-diggers who will dig our first well that will be used for the construction.  Then, we’ll go forward with picking out the spot for our house so we can build our courtyard wall.

The next step will then be contracting a builder to give us another estimate on how much our house will cost.  We’re hoping to readjust our blueprint to bring costs down.  WILL YOU PRAY for wisdom in this whole process.  We also are in need of more funds.  Right now we have about $15,000, but that will not be enough for the whole house.  WE ARE TRUSTING GOD to make ends meet!

I also wanted to let you know that I (Stef.) have the opportunity to attend a language learning workshop in Dakar next month.  It’s kind of unexpected since I was at the bottom of a huge waiting list, but I’m excited about a chance to enhance our ministry with this training. The scary part is gonna be leaving my family for 2 whole weeks!! This is a first for me.  Daniel has taken several survey trips to neighboring countries for weeks at a time and I’ve stayed with the kids.  This time, I’ll be traveling.  PRAY for us as we’ll be separated for a bit and for Daniel as he’ll continue homeschooling. If you would like to help with the finances for airfare ($600) or the cost of the training ($800) and anything in between, let us know.  It would be greatly appreciated!

So, I think that is all for this update. I apologize for the lack of cohesion.  I guess it’s more a “bullet-point” update since I’m rushing to post it before our internet goes out 😉  FYI, Elijah turns 8 on Oct. 19th.  I can’t believe it!  He’s so excited about his birthday…even though there’s not much to do out here in the village, ha!

We really appreciate your prayers and support!  Thank God along with us for the progress in ministry we’ve been seeing and pray with us for His guidance in the opportunities that lie ahead!

Our most recent “opportunity” was to reach out to the kids in the community through kickball!  I’m so glad I brought a few balls over.  We’re hoping to make this a weekly event. Evangelism is all about relationships!
